Pot Becomes Art Patron In California

Posted on November 6th, 2010

While other nonprofit art groups have to search for grants, Life is Art recently began to obtain financing in the form of marijuana plants. The group plans to present an exhibition on its land, a 120 acres property in the high oak chaparral of Sonoma County. Under the liberal medical marijuana laws in California, Life is Art will present sculpture and installation work by 20 visiting artists. Some of the artists will help bring in the harvest and the income from the crops will support projects to create an art retreat north of San Francisco and hopefully, a new economic engine for art philanthropy.

It seems that instead of trying to raise money the traditional way, it is simpler to sell high-quality medical marijuana with wholesale prices at $200 or more an ounce in the Bay Area. People behind Life Is Art think that is a more honest way of supporting their cause, working with the fruits of the land instead of looking for donors.

The whole game of finding support just started to seem so childish, said Kirsha Kaechele, the foundation’s director. So I decided to grow up and become a marijuana farmer.

In California, Proposition 19 which is designed to legalize recreational marijuana will be voted for in November. This could make California the first state to legalize marijuana, and growers will be able to donate portions of their profit to nonprofit causes like AIDS charities.

Marijuana User Light Up In Canadian Parliament

Posted on November 4th, 2010

Samuel Mellace lit up a joint in the Canadian House of Commons in order to draw attention to the unfair rules set by Health Canada. Health Canada does not allow the use of medical marijuana in creams or food, and is trying to slow the processing license applications, according to Postmedia News.

Smoking marijuana is not the only way, said Samuel Mellace. There’s other methods, there’s people that cannot smoke.

Mellace owns New Age Medical Solutions, a company that produces items containing marijuana extract, such as a hand lotion and butter that can be used for baking and cooking. He lit the marijuana cigarette while sitting in the House of Commons public gallery while the daily question period was coming to an end. When a security guard asked him to put out the joint, he did not protest.

Marijuana Is Now Bringing Some Families Closer

Posted on November 3rd, 2010

Buying marijuana for aging patients is bringing some families closer as elderly patients have the option of using medical marijuana to alleviate their condition. The growing acceptance of medical marijuana has changed the way older people perceive the use of cannabis.

We have concerns about the law, but I would not go back to not taking the cookie and going through what I went through, a patient said. Of course, if they catch me, I’ll have to quit taking it.

Bryan declined the use of his full name for legal reasons but he agreed to share his story and that of how his parents have come to accept medical marijuana as an option for alleviating their heart ailment, dizzy spells and nausea. While they would have grounded Bryan when he was growing up if they had found out he was using marijuana, they decided to try brownies and ginger snaps laced with marijuana, prepared by their son. At their age they are not concerned that this would lead them to harder drugs, as they used to fear about Bryan.

However, such stories are rare, less than 1% of people aged 65 and over had smoked marijuana during 2009, according to a survey by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration. Cannabinoids have shown promise in relieving pain, especially pain that arises from nerve damage. In the U.S. there are two cannabinoid prescription drugs approved for use in order to treat nausea and appetite loss.

Older people may face risks with marijuana due to the secrecy surrounding illegal drug use. Patients do not always admit to their illegal drug use and marijuana can raise heart rates and lower blood pressure.
For some families, marijuana used to be the root of all their fights, but now the drug is bringing them closer.

Latino Civil Rights Group Backs Proposition 19

Posted on November 2nd, 2010

The California chapter of the oldest Latino civil right group back Proposition 19, the November ballot proposal to legalize and tax recreational marijuana in California. The League of United Latin American Citizens of California stated that young Latinos are arrested and charged with possessing and cultivating marijuana much more frequently than other groups. The California NAACP has also shown support for Proposition 19.

Bringing marijuana under the control of law will reduce violence related to illegal marijuana trade in California and Mexico, according to Argentina Davila-Luevano, state director.

A poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute in California revealed that 63% of Latino voters support Proopsition 19, while only 52% of all voters think legalizing recreational marijuana is a beneficial measure.
